THE local aviation industry is facing one of its toughest challenges yet: skyrocketing oil prices. Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd's recent earnings were dampened by record-high jet fuel prices (+54% year-on-year) as fuel hedging and surcharges failed to offset the impact on costs.
